Nobody thinks about backups until the day they desperately need one. A hack, a botched update, a hosting failure — any of them can wipe out years of work in an instant. The good news: protecting yourself takes about five minutes.
Why "my host backs up" isn't enough
Many hosts do keep backups — but they're often infrequent, hard to restore, and stored on the same server as your site. If that server fails, so does the backup. You want backups that are automatic, frequent, and kept somewhere else entirely.
The five-minute setup
- Install a reputable backup plugin. There are excellent ones for WordPress that handle everything automatically.
- Set a schedule. Daily is ideal for active sites and shops; weekly is a fine minimum for simpler sites.
- Send them off-site. Connect cloud storage — Google Drive, Dropbox, or similar — so your backups live somewhere separate from your host.
- Keep several versions. Retain at least a week's worth, so if a problem sneaks in unnoticed you can roll back to before it started.
What a good backup includes
Both halves of your site: the files (themes, plugins, images) and the database (your posts, pages, products, and orders). Miss either and the restore is incomplete.
Peace of mind, on autopilot
Once it's set up, you never have to think about it again — until the day it saves you. And on that day, it's the best money and minutes you ever spent.
